Smiling person with cap and glasses in front of striped wall, hands together. Text reads: "The In-Between Is NOT THE ENEMY. It Might Be Where You Find God."

What if the stillness you've been avoiding — the uncomfortable, uncertain, full-of-mystery stillness — is actually where you connect to something real?

I've been sitting with that question a lot lately.

If you've walked away from a belief system, you know the feeling. The moment the framework collapses, the instinct kicks in almost immediately. Find something new. Find the right answer. Find the truth. Figure out what's real.

That's a valid experience. I've lived it myself. I traded one ideology for another in search of that truth. And there's nothing wrong with that.

But I want to propose something. What if the in-between, the space where you don't have all the answers, where you don't know what's true yet, is actually where you find everything you're looking for?

The Past, the Future, and the Only Moment That Actually Matters

Here's how I think about it.

The past is the belief system you came from. The future is the life you're trying to build. But the present moment, that small uncomfortable in-between space, is where real transformation actually happens.

It's the only place where the future you're envisioning can actually come into being. But if you're jumping from one rigid framework to another, if you're living anywhere but here, it's hard to find what you're actually looking for.

I know because I do it too. Just today I was caught up in thinking about everything that's broken in the world, everything I want to see different in my own life. And when I'm in that space I feel nothing but fear and anxiety. Then I swing the other direction, back into the past, replaying mistakes, sitting in regret, afraid of making the wrong choice again.

So often I'm in one of those two places. But I'm learning to sit in the in-between. And it's changing everything.

This Was Always Part of the Design

Every wisdom tradition has a version of this space. The desert. The void. The dark night of the soul. And on the other side of those experiences, people have some of the most profound spiritual encounters of their lives.

Stripping away inherited frameworks to get to the core of who you actually are is one of the most ancient spiritual practices there is. It's not a detour. It's the path.

I think we were made for this. The questioning. The unraveling. The sitting in the tension of not knowing. That's not failure. That's formation.

What If You Turned Inward Instead?

What if instead of reaching outside yourself for the next answer, the next framework, the next right way of thinking, you turned inward?

What if the stillness you've been avoiding is actually where you connect to something real? The only reality that actually exists. What if that's where God is. Where your source is. Where your essence lives.

The present moment, this uncomfortable, disorienting, in-between space, is the only place where you can actually meet yourself. Not the self you were told to be. The self that's been there the whole time.

You don't have to have it all figured out.

The answers you're looking for probably aren't in the next framework or the next belief system. They're already inside you.

The in-between is exactly where you find them.

If this resonates I'd love to hear where you are.
